Parents in Education
The Parents in Education Programme is aimed at parents who want to develop the skills and confidence to encourage support, and motivate their children through their educational development, and to allow for the development of effective parent school partnership.
The programme was developed by the National College of Ireland and has been running successfully in Dublin for many years.
OPEN plan to take this programme to all our member groups across the regions.
While the programme is three years in total it is in fact only 2 hours per week for 22 weeks, of each year.
In the first year there is strong emphasis on building parental and personal self esteem.
Year two aims to strengthen links between home and school, equips parents with study skills to support their children and looks at management committees with emphasis on parent councils etc.
Year three builds on years one and two and then focuses on Leadership skills, facilitation skills and group work.
Parents who complete the three years can move on to become a Parents in Education Programme facilitator.
It is OPEN’s intention to support at least two lone parents in every region in the country to be trained as facilitators in the programme, so they can continue to deliver Parents in Education to lone parent groups and others within their areas.
